Lighting for High Performance and LEED Buildings

As designers, we have a variety of choices to make concerning technologies that allow our projects to be as energy efficient as possible.  LED and CFL technology changes and improvements have been frequent, but are they being developed and used sensibly? Do we jump to use LED and CFL fixtures because they are the “in” thing without considering all of the possible negative results? Having a good grasp on energy efficiency in design has more to do with using common sense and balancing the use of appropriate technology than it does with typical thoughts such as watts per square foot and being “green.” Good design practice is never excessive, especially when it comes to lighting design.

During this seminar, we will be able to review and evaluate LED and CFL fixtures, see then perform, and consider them in “typical” lighting applications. Commercial and residential applications will be analyzed and compared to “traditional” incandescent and halogen approaches.

High performance architecture needs collaborators who understand all the “lighting machine” components that contribute to a successful project. This high efficiency lighting workshop will build upon a review of fundamentals, providing knowledge of each of the component parts and how they interface with the whole. Project examples, working demonstrations, tools for measuring luminance and illuminated samples will be used to communicate concepts and we’ll address LEED compliance for interior and exterior illumination.

LEED Green Associate Training

About the Green Associate Credential and Exam requirements:
The Green Associate credential has been developed by USGBC’s educational affiliate GBCI  “For professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice… which denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction, and operations.” – GBCI

Completing this course satisfies the “Experience” eligibility requirement for students wishing to take the Green Associate Exam by “addressing green building principles”.  Certificates of completion issued at the end of the Training may be submitted by students in compliance with this requirement.

The Training:
The Green Associate Training will prepare those seeking to earn the USGBC/GBCI’s new entry-level professional credential, Green Associate.  Students will engage in a full-day interactive session followed two weeks later by a Practice Exam and Exam Review session.

This course will benefit practitioners from across the design and construction community, including builders, designers, facility managers, developers, owners, lenders and vendors and manufacturers of green/high performance products and services.  Trainers from The Jordan Institute, the state’s leader in LEED/High Performance Consulting, will introduce students to High Performance buildings and LEED, followed by a step-by-step review of material they will need to know for the Green Associate Exam.

Students will test their knowledge with in-class exercises, quizzes and homework, leading up to their participation in the final review for the Practice Exam and Exam Review.  Hand-outs, home work and a take-home practice exam to complete before the in-class Practice Exam will be provided to help students prepare.
